This tool makes smooth, easily repeatable dimples on chainstays during the build process or on existing frames.
The fixed and sliding blocks can be swapped so that it will also dimple the outside of the chainstay on an existing frame.
It uses a thrust bearing behind the sliding block for smooth compression. It also has a thrust screw and pad with 15 degrees of angle range which allows the block to tilt slightly to better fit chainstays with bends at the dimple location. The thrust screw is M12×1.75 so you can dial in the dimple depth by multiplying the number of rotations by the thread pitch.
The top plate has a slot which helps with visibility when determining the dimple location.
Important information about the use of this tool on existing frames:
This tool will not fit between the chainstays of all frames. With many road frames and some CX and hybrid frames, there will be clearance issues with the standard dies. We offer the low profile dimple die to help remedy this. More information about tool clearance here:
Dimple Tool Backside Width Information
It’s recommended to have a dummy axle or a rear hub clamped in the dropouts to help stabilize the chainstay. Even with a dummy axle or hub in place, dimpling the chainstay could pull the chainstays inwards which would could cause a slight reduction in the rear hub spacing and would require it to be cold set afterwards.
It’s also recommended to first test this tool on a piece of scrap thinwall tubing to get a feel for the needed torque on the thrust screw to create a dimple. Here’s a good place to pick up a small section of chromoly tubing if scrap isn’t available- https://www.mcmaster.com/89955K849/
This tool has been tested on CrMo steel and 3/2.5 titanium with great results but we are not responsible for any damage caused to a frame. There are several factors to consider, including condition of the frame (internal rust?), proximity to a weld or bridge, paint type and dimple depth.

Round 7/8” (22.2mm)
